Recognizing Everyday Heroes
People in the Bay Area make a difference in the lives of others in their communities every day. The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter and civic leaders from six counties in the Bay Area are joining together to celebrate everyday heroism, recognizing those individuals whose extraordinary acts of kindness and courage make them heroes.
Be sure to join us for one of our seven events, held in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Solano Counties. Hear the inspiring stories of our heroes and network with business and community leaders in the Bay Area. All proceeds from the events will support the disaster preparedness and relief efforts of the American Red Cross in the Bay Area.

When Steven Stenberg went to school last April he had no idea that he would soon be credited with saving three lives. Stenberg was working on homework when he heard a loud crashing noise. Looking around, he saw that a pickup truck had crashed through a fence, coming to rest on a fire hydrant just yards away from his classroom. As other students watched in stunned amazement, Stenberg went into action, quickly hopping the fence and pulling an elderly couple from the smoking car. He also saved the couple's dog, receiving several bites on his hand. The couple and their pet survived the accident with only minor injuries thanks to Stenberg's quick thinking and heroic actions.Read more about last year’s Alameda County heroes.
One day in April, Sophie, a tiny Maltese dog weighing only about nine and a half pounds, was walking with her owner on Fulton Street when she was attacked by a pit bull that was walking with its owner. The owner of the pit bull had lost control of her dog. Gabriel Johnson, a veterinary technician from the San Francisco Pet Hospital just two doors from where Sophie was attacked, took the lead to save Sophie. "I heard screaming and jumped over the counter. I came out the door and saw a dog fight," Johnson said. Jennifer Tacy, also a veterinary technician from the pet hospital, rushed to his aid. Together they were able to separate the dogs and rush Sophie into the pet hospital. The quick actions of Johnson and Tacy saved the life of the little dog Sophie.Read more about last year’s San Francisco County heroes
